Infectious diseases medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites
It is fundamental in the management of complex infections, dealing with:
- Emerging infections
- Antibiotic-resistant infections
- Infections affecting immunocompromised patients (e.g. transplant recipients, cancer patients)
- Hospital-acquired infections (nosocomial)
SYMPTOMS
It is recommended to consult an infectious disease specialist in case of:
- Persistent fever of unknown origin
- Infections that do not respond to common therapies
- Infections in fragile patients (e.g. transplant recipients, immunosuppressed, cancer patients)
- Health problems after travel to tropical areas
- For the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted diseases
- For the diagnosis and management of chronic infections (hepatitis, HIV, ...)
TYPES OF EXAMINATIONS
- Serological tests that detect the presence of antibodies or antigens in the blood (tests for HIV, hepatitis B (HbsAg, HBcAb), hepatitis C (HCV), syphilis, ...)
- Culture tests that analyze bacterial or fungal cultures of pathogens present in blood (blood culture), urine, feces, or swabs (antibiogram, ...)
- Molecular biology tests that identify the DNA or RNA of the pathogen for rapid diagnosis of viral, bacterial and parasitic infections (PCR, ...)
- Parasitological tests performed on different biological samples to identify parasites
- Radiological tests prescribed by the infectious disease specialist to visualize infection in specific organs
- Tests on different biological samples such as cerebrospinal fluid, sputum or swabs (nasal, pharyngeal, genital).
