Hematology
Hematology is the branch of medicine that deals with blood, the lymphatic system, and blood-forming organs, such as bone marrow. The hematologist studies the causes, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood diseases and blood-forming organs.
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of blood diseases are varied and often depend on the altered blood component:
- Fatigue, paleness, and weakness may indicate anemia (red blood cells)
- Fever, frequent infections, and itching may indicate problems with white blood cells
- Easy bruising, abnormal bleeding, or clotting problems may indicate platelet or coagulation factor dysfunction

- Blood test analysis (complete blood count, coagulation tests, ...)
- Other possible diagnostic tests (bone marrow tests, genetic tests, ...)

- Red blood cells: anemia (decrease) / polycythemia (increase)
- White blood cells: leukopenia (decrease) / leukocytosis (increase)
- Platelets: thrombocytopenia (decrease) / thrombocytosis (increase)
- Bone marrow dysfunctions
- Alterations in plasma proteins
- Enlargement of lymphatic organs (lymphadenomegaly and splenomegaly)
- Alteration of coagulation processes in thrombotic or hemorrhagic directions
- Alteration of immune processes
- Alteration of iron metabolism
- Altered metabolism of certain vitamins (Vitamin B12, folic acid)
