Shoulder orthopedics is the branch of orthopedics that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and injuries of the shoulder joint.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body and consists of 1 capsuloligamentous system, 5 joints, and 26 muscles.

SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of shoulder conditions or injuries are:

  • Pain
  • Loss of strength
  • Joint instability
  • Loss of function in everyday activities and sports

Diagnosis is made through a specialist examination and specific clinical tests that assess:

  • Origin and location of the pain
  • Flexibility, range of motion, and joint stability
  • Muscle strength
  • Coordination
  • Postural alignment
  • Residual shoulder function
  • Integrity of the rotator cuff

The diagnostic assessment is completed with specific imaging and tests such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), MR arthrography, CT, CT arthrography, bone scintigraphy, and electromyography (EMG).

Conditions can be classified as:

  • Acute
    (inflammatory, traumatic)
  • Chronic
    (degenerative, occupational, metabolic, calcific tendinopathies)
  • Mixed
    (a combination of the above, including neurological conditions)
  • Procedures using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques
    • glenohumeral or acromioclavicular instability
    • rotator cuff repair
    • treatment of calcific tendinopathy
    • treatment of joint stiffness
  • Joint replacement surgery
  • Open procedures/ open surgery
