Oncological Orthopedics
Oncological orthopedics is the super-specialized branch of orthopedics that deals with the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors, both primary (originating in bone or soft tissues) and secondary (metastases).
Sarcomas are rare malignant tumors that can affect bone and soft tissues, but more frequently affect long bones and connective tissues (muscles, tendons, subcutaneous fat).

TYPES OF SARCOMA

Main bone sarcomas:
- Osteosarcoma: affects long bones, more common in young subjects;
- Ewing's sarcoma: more common in children and adolescents;
- Chondrosarcoma: affects cartilage, more common in adults. -
Main soft tissue sarcomas:
- Liposarcoma: affects adipose tissue;
- Rhabdomyosarcoma: affects skeletal muscles
- Leiomyosarcoma: affects smooth muscle.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms vary depending on the type of sarcoma, but may include:
- Persistent pain, often nocturnal
- Drug-resistant pain
- Localized swelling
- Presence of a palpable mass
- Spontaneous bone fractures
- Decreased mobility
DIAGNOSIS
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Computed Tomography (CT)
- Biopsy
- Bone scintigraphy
TREATMENTS
Treatment depends on the type of sarcoma and the stage of the disease.
