Shoulder Prosthesis
The shoulder prosthesis procedure involves replacing the damaged parts of the joint with an artificial device in order to restore mobility and reduce pain.
Shoulder prostheses can be of three types:
- Total prosthesis or anatomical (arthroplasty) when the prosthetic replacement involves both components of the joint: humeral head and scapular glenoid. It is called "anatomical" because it reconstructs the anatomy of the shoulder with a hemisphere to replace the head of the humerus and a concave plate to replace the portion of the scapular glenoid.
- Partial prosthesis (endoprosthesis) when the prosthetic replacement involves only the head of the humerus
- Reverse prosthesis when the prosthetic replacement involves the inversion of the articular surfaces of the anatomical prosthesis: a hemisphere on the scapular glenoid and a concave plate to replace the humeral head

INDICATION
Shoulder prosthesis surgery is necessary when the joint, due to traumatic injuries or degenerative diseases, is damaged to such an extent that it compromises the mobility of the entire arm and conservative therapy is not effective.
PATHOLOGIES
Among the main pathologies that make surgery necessary are:
- Glenohumeral osteoarthritis
- Rotator cuff injuries

Complex fractures
(when the fracture involves the articular component of the humeral head, optimal fixation is sometimes not possible) - Rheumatoid arthritis
- Chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease with damage to the articular cartilage
- Osteonecrosis (causes: traumatic, related to hematological and dysmetabolic pathologies, chronic use of steroids..)
