SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS
Generally, after some time following a trauma, the patient experiences increasing pain in the affected ankle. The specialist requests weight-bearing X-rays, and the arthritic condition is revealed. Less commonly, joint degeneration may result from inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or forms of primary osteoarthritis.
The ideal candidate is a not-so-young patient suffering from painful ankle osteoarthritis, with limited varus or valgus deformity and good bone stock. Absolute contraindications include previous joint infections, severe deformities, bone deficiencies, and poor skin condition of the ankle.
