The Ilizarov method is an orthopedic surgical technique of bone elongation, invented by Russian physician Ilizarov, which involves the use of a circular external fixator to lengthen, correct, and treat bone fractures and deformities by taking advantage of the body’s bone regeneration capacity.

PROCEDURE
  1. Osteotomy:
    an incision is made to fracture the bone in a controlled manner, preserving the vasculature and periosteum.
  2. Fixator application:
     Kirschner wires and screws are inserted into the bone, which are connected to metal hoops that form the outer “cage” of the fixator. The hoops will be connected to each other by threaded rods.
  3. Gradual correction:
     daily lengthening of the threaded rods connecting the circles is provided, spacing the bone fragments and stimulating regeneration of new tissue.
  4. Bone regeneration:
     the bone responds to this gradual distraction by creating new cells and tissue, lengthening the limb or healing the fracture.
With such a method it is possible to
  • To arrive at stability of bone fragments by consolidation of the lesion
  • Respect the vascularization of bill fragments, thus decreasing the probability of bacterial contamination for the part affected by the injury
  • Ambulate at "load" with crutches as early as the first postoperative day, ensuring good stimulation of the venous and lymphatic circulation immediately and preventing edema and osteoporosis
  • Limb lengthening for posttraumatic or congenital dysmetria
  • Aesthetic limb lengthening
