Shoulder orthopedics is the branch of orthopedics that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder joint pathologies and injuries.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body and consists of 1 capsular-ligamentous system, 5 joints, and 26 muscles.

SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms in case of shoulder pathologies or injuries are:

  • Pain
  • Loss of strength
  • Joint instability
  • Loss of functionality in daily activities and sports practice

The diagnosis is made through a specialist examination and specific clinical tests that evaluate:

  • Pain origin and location
  • Flexibility, joint range of motion and stability
  • Muscular strength
  • Coordination
  • Postural patterns
  • Residual shoulder function
  • Rotator cuff integrity

The diagnostic hypothesis is completed with specific instrumental examinations such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), MR arthrography, CT, CT arthrography, bone scintigraphy, and electromyography (EMG)

The pathologies can be classified into:

  • Acute
    (inflammatory, traumatic)
  • Chronic
    (degenerative, occupational, metabolic, calcific tendinopathy)
  • Mixed
    (combination of the above including neurological pathologies)
  • Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgical techniques
