CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

Conditions affecting this complex joint—highly functional yet frequently prone to trauma—can impair normal daily activities due to reduced or absent joint function and acute or chronic pain.

Typical hand and wrist conditions are numerous and may arise from traumatic, degenerative, arthritic, or rheumatic causes:

  • Nerve compression syndromes of the hand
    (carpal tunnel syndrome, Guyon's canal syndrome, radial tunnel syndrome)
  • Tenosynovitis of the flexor tendons of the wrist and fingers
    (trigger finger or Notta's disease, subcutaneous injuries of the hand's extensor and flexor tendons, mallet finger)
  • Hand osteoarthritis
    (rhizarthrosis, osteoarthritis of the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints, radiocarpal osteoarthritis, pseudarthrosis of the fingers and metacarpals)
  • Capsuloligamentous and skeletal wrist disorders
    (synovitis, ganglion cyst..)
  • Tendon cysts, benign and malignant tumors, digital neuromas, Dupuytren's disease

Treatments for hand and wrist joint disorders are performed using advanced minimally invasive, microsurgical, and arthroscopic techniques:

  • Hand procedures:
    • Trapeziometacarpal arthroscopy
    • Treatment of finger stiffness, reconstructive surgery with artificial tendons and tendon transfers, surgery for compressive conditions (trigger finger)
    • Correction of deformities with bone grafting for nonunited fractures and painful stumps
    • Management of post-traumatic stiffness, joint stiffness, partial or total arthrodesis, joint replacements
    • Ligament reconstructions for post-traumatic sequelae or immunologic diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
    • Nerve compressions at various anatomical levels
  • Wrist procedures:
    • Wrist arthroscopy, treatment of wrist and radial fractures, treatment of radiocarpal and first metacarpophalangeal sprains, treatment of scaphoid fractures and their complications, treatment of wrist stiffness, treatment of wrist instability and post-traumatic ligament injuries (recent and chronic), treatment of nonunion defects of the distal radius and ulna
