Hallux valgus is a foot deformity characterized by lateral deviation of the big toe toward the other toes, while the first metatarsal bone (the bone at the base of the toe) shifts toward the inside of the foot, creating a painful bony protrusion on the inner side. This condition can be severely disabling as it can cause pain, inflammation, and make it difficult to wear normal footwear.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS

Treatment of hallux valgus depends on the severity. In mild cases, pain can be managed with conservative treatments that include the use of appropriate footwear, orthotics, braces, and physiotherapy. In more serious cases, the indicated solution is surgical intervention to realign the bone and soft tissues to restore proper anatomy and functionality of the foot.

HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY

Surgical intervention for hallux valgus correction aims to realign the big toe by correcting the bone deformity.

There are numerous surgical techniques available to the surgeon to plan and perform a personalized intervention based on each patient’s characteristics with the objective of providing effective and long-lasting correction.

OSTEOTOMY TECHNIQUES

Osteotomy techniques involve cutting the bones of the first ray of the big toe joint to realign and reposition them to correct the deformity.

The choice of osteotomy type, namely the method for performing the cut and subsequent bone reconstruction, depends on various factors including the severity of the deformity, the patient’s age, and bone quality (normal, porous, …):
