This is the branch of surgery that deals with diseases affecting the peripheral nerves of the upper limb.
Peripheral nerves conduct impulses to and from the brain to allow constant communication between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
This connection is essential for the functioning of the human body as it regulates fundamental functions such as motor skills, as well as thermal, pain, tactile-pressure sensitivity, and proprioception (which detects the functional state of the organ over time and space).

CAUSES
Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves can result from
- Nerve compression (carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve compression at the elbow..)
- Cutting traumas
- Crushing traumas with consequent nerve interruption
TREATMENT

Neurolysis:
surgical procedure to release the nerve from compression -
Neuroplasty:
surgical procedure in which the damaged part of the nerve is removed and the remaining portion is protected by placing it between soft and vascularized tissues -
Nerve grafts:
surgical procedure involving the grafting of nerve segments between two damaged stumps to restore the continuity of the peripheral nerve
