Born in Rome on March 20, 1946, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1970 from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where he completed his studies obtaining specializations in Orthopedics and Traumatology (1975); in Kinesitherapy and Physiotherapy in Orthopedics (1976); and Sports Medicine (1979). He began his academic career at the II Orthopedic Clinic of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, first as a Fellow (1972-1975), then as a Contractor (1977-1983), and subsequently as an Assistant Professor (1977 to 1983). In 1983, he was appointed Associate Professor of Traumatology, and with this title, he carried out his academic activities at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Rome until May 1, 2000, when he took up service at the University of Motor Sciences (University of Foro Italico-Rome 4). In 2006, he was appointed Full Professor of Pathology of the Locomotor System (MED/33) and continued his activity at the University of Motor Sciences with this qualification. Since 2013, he has been serving as Deputy Pro-Rector at the aforementioned University.
Professor Mariani was a founding member of several Italian and foreign Scientific Societies (Italian Society of Arthroscopy, Italian Society of Sports Traumatology, European Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Sports Traumatology). Within the European Society of Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery (ESSKA), he served as Chairman of the Educational Committee for over 10 years.
He has carried out extensive editorial activity: he was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology Arthroscopy, a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Arthroscopy and Related Research, a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthopaedic Science and the journal Sports Medicine. He was the editor of the first Italian Video Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology.
In 2000, he received an Honorary Degree in Pleven (Bulgaria) and in 2008 an Honorary Degree in Isparta (Turkey).
He has organized numerous national and international congresses, theoretical and practical courses in arthroscopic surgery. Professor Mariani is the author of numerous scientific papers published in international and Italian journals. He was also the author of the first Italian monograph on arthroscopy (1984) and its subsequent re-edition (1993), the monograph on the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (2004) – translated into English – and 27 chapters in Italian and foreign monographs.
